Christian Mbanza [Chris Swchagga]
Photographer, Rwanda

From a point-and-shoot camera in 2005 to a career that finds him traveling the world, Christian Mbanza [Chris Swchagga] is a force to be reckoned with. He tells unique stories through various mediums, including photography, design, sculpture, costumes, and installations, exhibited globally. His work is driven by curiosity and he takes inspiration from people, travel, and culture.

For the past five years, Rwanda, The Land of a Thousand Hills, has been his place of refuge, pushing him to examine the relationship between humans and their refuge and how that connection (good and bad) shapes, or at least influences, how they deal with situations.

This series of photographs looks at the concept of REFUGE from the viewpoint of a creative with refugee status in Rwanda. Refuge is a person, a moment, a journey, a place, both mental and physical. It's peace, calm, safety. A home far from home or, a home inside home.
