EMERGING TALENT : EAST AFRICA
Artists in East Africa have been emerging from very static and reductive traditional imagery - bound up with a colonial history that excelled in erasing whole histories - and favored motifs which too often depicted wildlife and people as ethnographic specimens!
We are so thrilled to show these young artists in this exhibition - all of whom share one thing - which is the desire to retell their history and propel forward with a future facing narrative.
These artists' work spans the gamut - from multi-media tapestries, photography, digital prints to oils and acrylic. They are championed and mentored by galleries in Uganda and Rwanda dedicated to this transformative moment for the region: thank you KomezArt in Rwanda and Masaka Gallery in Uganda!
These East African artists' figurative style is an expression of pride in their history, their contemporary state and future aspiration. The work is vibrant and literally pops on the walls.
