Trevor Aloka
Trevor Aloka is a multimedia artist. Despite his impressive body of work, Aloka thinks of himself as an artist still struggling to find his footing. “I just wish I had found art sooner; I would be so far by no,” a statement supported by his drive since committing to the craft in 2019. Aloka had his first solo exhibition in Colombia, and Masaka amid the coronavirus pandemic, two years later.
His work has also been showcased in Jerusalem and Dar es Salaam. A product of the hands-on village of artists in Uganda, Aloka has greatly benefited from his first workshop at 32° East, Surfaces by Afriart Gallery and Masaka Gallery. Drawing inspiration first, from his immediate surroundings Aloka aims to trigger public debate, to awaken interest and to provide solutions for problems that impact his community. He is affiliated with Weaver Bird Residency's MAKE MASAKA project where he together with other local artists are painting murals around Masaka city.
Currently, in light of the ongoing gold mining and discoveries of millions of tons of gold in Uganda’s Karamoja region Aloka has picked interest in exploring potentialities and possibilities embedded in the local communities. As a case study Aloka is using this approach to reinvent his art practice as related to gold and Greek mythology. And that is the ‘Midas Touch’. Anything can be turned into gold.
